Description
Most sofas contain toxic chemicals due to the materials and manufacturing processes used. Here’s why:
1. Flame Retardants
Many sofas, especially those made before 2015, contain flame retardant chemicals like PBDEs, TCPP, or chlorinated Tris. These chemicals were added to meet flammability standards, but they have been linked to hormone disruption, neurological damage, and even cancer. Over time, these chemicals break down into dust, which we inhale or ingest.
2. Formaldehyde and VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds)
Many sofas use glues, adhesives, and synthetic fabrics that release formaldehyde and VOCs. These compounds off-gas into your home, leading to indoor air pollution. VOCs are associated with headaches, respiratory issues, and long-term health effects.
3.Polyurethane Foam
Most sofas are filled with polyurethane foam, which is derived from petroleum and releases harmful chemicals as it degrades. It’s also highly flammable, which is why it’s often treated with flame retardants.
4. Stain-Resistant and Water-Repellent Treatments
Fabrics are often treated with perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) to make them stain- and water-resistant. These chemicals don’t break down easily and have been linked to immune system suppression and developmental issues.
5. Pesticides and Mold Inhibitors
Some sofas, especially those shipped from overseas, are treated with fungicides and pesticides to prevent mold growth during transport. These can cause skin irritation, allergies, and other health issues.
We bought this sofa at Slow Sofa at 3400
In agust, it’s fairly new. If it has an off-gassing smell, that’s likely from flame retardants, adhesives, or synthetic materials. Many modern sofas still contain harmful chemicals, even if manufacturers claim they are “low-emission.”
